Step 1: Evaluate the situation
In the event of a car accident you should follow several steps to help keep yourself protected. First you want come to a stop, turn your hazards lights on, and park your vehicle out of the way of traffic. Call 911 if you or someone involved in the accident needs any medical assistance. If the vehicle you  get in an accident with is unattended try to make contact with the owner. If you can't contact the owner you must leave a note with your name, contact information, and a description of the incident.

Step 2: Gather information
Next you will exchange insurance information with the other party involved.

  • Name, address, and contact details
  • Driver’s license number
  • License plate number of involved party
  • Insurance information, policy number, adjusters name
  • Make, model and year of the car
  • Photos of accident if possible

Step 3: File claim
You then should notify your insurance company after the car accident. The sooner your agent is aware of your car accident, the sooner they can begin your claim process. Your insurance company and the other driver's insurance company need each other's contact information to decide who pays for the damages.

If you or your insurance company have a “preferred shop” or “DRP facility” repair your vehicle you may be unaware of important decisions in regards to the type of repair and parts being used to complete your vehicle's repair. You should choose an auto body shop based on your needs and principles. You may have your vehicle repaired wherever you see fit.

Step 4: Schedule estimate
