It can be a nerve racking experience being involved in a collision with a deer. Thankfully there are several ways you can help limit your odds of being involved in this type of collision.
How to avoid deer?
Drive the speed limit. It minimizes the amount of damage during a collision, and will increase your braking distance. Use your high beams when possible and wear your seat belt; this will significantly decrease your chance of a serious injury. Look for deer crossing signs, as this is an indication of the areas deer population. Be observant of both sides of the road and watch for glares of eyes in the ditches.
When are deer most active?
Deer are the most active at dusk and dawn. Their active season is between October and January. They are also active during the summer seasons looking for food and trying to avoid bugs. Deer often travel in groups so if you see one you will more than likely see another.
What to do if you can't avoid deer?
If you approach a deer while driving slow down and try to stop. Do not swerve to miss the deer. Many collisions are caused by swerving into another lane. Swerving will increase your likelihood of hitting another driver, driveway, or ditch. The deer may run into the area where you are swerving. If you not able avoid hitting a deer, try to skim it to reduce damage. Let off your brakes so that the deer doesn’t get hit at the lowest point which increases the likelihood of it going through your windshield.
What if you are involved in a collision?
If you get into a collision with a deer call for emergency help if you are injured, or if some else is injured. You are not required to notify authorities, however a police report will validate your claim to your insurance company. Your claim will more than likely be paid by your comprehensive coverage.
